The concept of mindfulness was thrown back into the cultural zeitgeist in August 2024, when creator Jools Lebron went viral for the phrase, “very demure, very mindful.” But this ancient and highly beneficial practice has, of course, existed long before this fun phrase exploded on social media.

There are plenty of ways to practice mindfulness and root yourself in the present, from repeating positive affirmations to focusing on your breathing. Another simple but effective way to tap into a greater sense of awareness? Reading mindfulness quotes that remind you to slow down, stay present, and connect with your surroundings.

Read on for more details about the topic, as well as a list of inspiring, thought-provoking mindfulness quotes from mindfulness experts, authors, celebrities, professional athletes, and Peloton instructors.

What Is Mindfulness?

Generally, mindfulness refers to having full acceptance and awareness of the present moment.

“Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and engaged in the moment, without being distracted and without judgment,” explains Brook Choulet, MD, a concierge sports and performance psychiatrist. “It’s a state of being where you’re entirely in tune and conscious of your thoughts and emotions, as well as physical sensations.”

Practicing mindfulness is fairly simple, but it provides a powerful set of mental and physical benefits. According to the Center for Mindfulness at UMass Memorial Health, a regular mindfulness practice can be one tool to improve anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and other health issues.

How Mindfulness Quotes Can Help You Stay Present

These quotes are more than just words on a screen, and there’s research to back it up. Dr. Choulet points to a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, which found that a mindfulness practice can increase positive emotions in day-to-day life. As one part of your practice, you can carve out time to review mindfulness quotes that resonate with you.

“Reading quotes about mindfulness can help sharpen your skills and help you develop more of a mindful practice in your day-to-day,” she says. “In addition, reflecting on quotes can prompt you to pause and contemplate on your own self-awareness and shift your perspective.”

There are several other ways to sharpen your mindfulness skills over time. Dr. Choulet recommends practicing what she calls “mindfulness snacks,” which involves taking 60 seconds to focus on your breath or be fully present during a meal. You can also approach workouts as a form of moving meditation and give yourself extra compassion with your efforts.

There isn’t a finish line involved in practicing mindfulness, but rather, a lifelong journey to achieve what we can all get behind: serenity, peace, and a stronger sense of self.
