Benefits of Reading Strength Quotes

Mental and physical strength often work in tandem, and there’s research to support this dynamic, says Michele Kerulis, a licensed clinical professional counselor and associate professor with the Family Institute at Northwestern University.

“Researchers from different fields including sport psychology, mental health, medicine, and sport sciences have examined how and why quotes help people build strength,” she explains. “One reason is that quotes can take complex topics and turn them into digestible concepts that people can put into action. Quotes that are easy to understand and repeat, like a daily mantra, can help people develop lasting habits and improve self-esteem.”

As an example, Kerulis cites a research article published in the journal Communications in Humanities Research, which concluded that motivational quotes really do influence people to take action.

Reviewing an uplifting quote about strength can certainly put you in the right headspace, but remember that developing any kind of strength is a process. “Building emotional strength, like building physical strength, takes practice,” Kerulis says.
