Mama Athlete

Coming out of the UEFA Women's Euro 2022, we were proud to have partnered with Germany's national team and supported their training into the finals. But more specifically, we want to introduce you to meet Melanie Leupolz, the German football (soccer, for our American friends) professional who has been preparing for a different challenge with Peloton.

At just 28 years old, Melanie has already achieved quite a career: After winning the German Championship with FC Bayern Munich and eventually becoming captain of the team, she moved on to Chelsea FC in the English Premier League. Since 2013, she played for the German national team and won the European title as well as the Olympics.

From Professional Footballer to Mama Athlete

The ambitious Bavarian takes it even one step further as she takes on an additional career as a mother. Most of her teammates postpone their plans to grow a family until they retire from the pitch, but Melanie dares to do both at the same time. A real challenge, she admits, but with the right motivation and support from her family and the team, she’s eager and confident to master this task.

“I am confident, that you can manage your career and still have a family.“

Speaking of motivation, Melanie first encountered Peloton when she was on the national team and was immediately blown away. “Especially on the bike, you would never ride on this level.“ With the roster of Instructors and their guidance, she continuously pushes herself and gets the best out of each workout.

img-5-Mamathletin

“The instructors are challenging, and no two workouts are the same.“

The variety of the classes was also a game-changer in her opinion. “You can pick a new workout every day and it never gets boring, this is unlike any other.” This helped her adapt her training routine throughout the pregnancy and led to her discovery of yoga and meditation. Besides, the prenatal strength workouts kept her fit throughout her pregnancy, even with a baby belly in tow.

“I hope to be a role model for other women.“

Unsurprisingly, Melanie wants to return to the pitch as soon as possible post-pregnancy. “But all in a healthy kind of way.“ She knows that her comeback will be quite a challenge. “The body changes enormously.“ But she also believes that pregnancy has changed her as a person, and that she'll take this growth into the sport she knows and loves. Professional players from other various clubs have proved that it is possible to be a mother and remain a professional athlete, and ultimately this motivates and encourages Melanie to also become a role model for other women.
