Training for a marathon takes hours of hard work and dedication. One thing that can put a major damper on your training runs and race day, though? Gear that’s not meticulously purpose-built for endurance running. That’s why the Peloton Apparel team tapped Peloton Instructors and marathoners Becs Gentry and Matt Wilpers to help create a capsule collection of marathon running gear that checks all the boxes.
“Great running apparel fits well and helps you feel able to crush your run,” explains Becs. “It supports your training needs and definitely does not hold onto smells!”
As Matt explains, “When running a marathon, you want your clothing to last just like your body. That means it needs to handle moisture well and maintain its comfortable fit and form throughout the run. So you don't want the clothing feeling heavy, getting clumped up, and/or limiting range of motion causing a distraction, or worse yet, chafing.”
After over a year in the making, Peloton Apparel’s first marathon running gear collection is here! Learn more about exactly what went into the creation and why you’ll want to hit “add to cart” ASAP!
What’s In Peloton Apparel’s First-Ever Performance Marathon Running Collection
“The overall focus of the collection was to keep the design clean and minimal so the only thing you need to focus on is your run,” says Adriane Grace, Associate Director, Apparel Design & Development.
“I like the minimal approach to labels and design,” adds Matt. “This is simple and sleek. It's best to let your legs do the talking, not your clothing.”
These pieces are engineered to support you from mile one to 26.2. Here’s what’s inside the new collection:
The longer line on this bra top was a design request from Becs, who prefers a tank-meets-bra style. It features a high neck, racerback, and interior-faced bottom band with plush sweat channel elastic to help pull sweat away from the body. It also includes built-up inner construction for increased support to control bounce during long runs.
These high-rise tights have a laser cut hem and extra details to avoid chafe. The exterior back waistband stash pocket has been, elongated to hold gels, your ID, and keys.
Similar to the tights, these high-rise 7" inseam bike shorts have an elongated back waistband pocket for your gels, ID, and keys.
This classic muscle tank with a back panel uses Peloton Tech Mesh Fabric, a lightweight, and breathable fabric that will keep you cool by wicking moisture away.
For cooler days, or if you prefer more coverage, this crewneck, raglan short sleeve with side panel detailing features the same lightweight fabrication. As Matt mentions, “while it feels minimal to wear, the clothing does not look minimal. This is great for the more conservative runner (like myself).”
Matt specifically requested a running short with a 3” inseam, which he says are ideal for race day. These are brief-lined, have an interior drawcord for the perfect fit, and a back stash pocket for all your essentials. “I am always a fan of having a pocket in the back for gels and/or my keys,” says Matt.
For colder days, Matt recommends tights. These include an interior drawcord and right leg phone pocket with an interior card pocket. The fabric is not only moisture-wicking, but also has enhanced durability, which Matt describes as holding their form well, despite moisture and heat from your body.
3 Things to Love About Peloton Apparel’s Marathon Capsule Launch
1. You Can Say Goodbye to Chafing.
Nothing ruins a run like chafing, which can be caused by your skin repeatedly rubbing against material, creating friction. “Becs called out chaffing as a big issue for her during long runs,” explains Grace, as well as where seams hit on her.
“I look for pieces with few seams, especially in high chafe areas like around the chest or waistband,” says Becs. To reduce chafing in these areas, the Peloton Apparel design team worked to make the inner bra very smooth and with few seams. On the tight/bike short they removed the center back seam that can rub on the tailbone. All seams are also flatlocked using seam-soft thread, which is a special performance thread to further reduce chafing.
On the men’s side, Matt calls out that the singlet has a slim fit, which helps it fit more snug resulting in less rubbing. He also particularly appreciates the impact the lined 3” shorts have for him, “I want to minimize how much clothing I have to wear out in a race...including underwear. As far as running clothing is concerned, when you race, you don't even want to feel that it's there, and that's how this kit feels.”
2. You’ll Stay Dry and Cool.
The women’s collection uses a sweat-wicking and ultra-lightweight material made from recycled water bottles, two features that are key for Becs. “I look for material with tech that is going to wick the sweat from my skin aka help minimize the chance of me getting cold!”
As Becs explains, “Those long duration, steady-pace endurance runs are going to make you sweat, but in a different way—probably more localized to where fabric sits—so you want to ensure you have breathable sweat wicking material so the moisture doesn’t sit on your skin, waiting to make you chilly, especially outside over distance.”
She also prefers light materials that can easily be layered and removed as her body temperature rises during long runs.
The men’s collection features tech mesh, a quick-drying, lightweight all-over mesh that helps to move moisture away from the body.
3. Reflectivity Makes it Perfect for Early Mornings or After Dusk.
Marathon training requires many hours of running, and if you end up running at night or during the early morning, when the sun is down, high visibility is important for safety. “On night runs you must wear apparel with reflective detailing so others can see you,” says Becs. Throughout the collection, you’ll find a reflective checkerboard race flag detail that is a signifier for the collection as well as other reflective details for early morning or late night training runs.
