As a Peloton Member, you know first-hand just how powerful exercise and meditation can be for your wellbeing. From the glow you feel after an endurance run to the calm you experience after a guided meditation, movement and meditation are extremely powerful tools for your physical and mental health. But there’s another highly effective wellness tool you might not know about: your breath.

Consciously using your breath to support your health and wellbeing is a practice that’s been used for centuries, but if you’ve never tried breathwork before, you might not know where to begin or the many benefits involved. So in order to help Members like you get the most out of it, Peloton has acquired Breathwrk, a leading wellness app specializing in breathing exercises. This is just one of many ways we're working to further our mission of helping Members live fit, strong, long, and happy lives.

Keep reading for everything Peloton Members need to know about Breathwrk, including how to access the app plus all the perks that come with the practice.

What Is Breathwrk?

The Breathwrk App features guided, neuroscience-based breathing exercises and classes that help you manage stress, enhance sleep, boost workout performance and recovery, improve focus, and more. It uses helpful visual cues, sound, and pacing to help you time your inhales, exhales, and holds.

When you open the Breathwrk App, you can browse breathing exercises by category or goal (think: calm, awake, pre-workout, focus, or anxiety ease), dive into a daily class series, or try other guided classes based on your goals. During a breathing exercise, you’ll follow cues to breathe in, hold, and breathe out, while during a guided class, a Breathwrk coach will walk you through how to time your breaths (for example: “in, two, three, four; out, two, three, four, five, six”).

If you’re a Peloton All Access, Guide, or App+ Member, you can download Breathwrk for free on your Apple® or Android® phone. (App One Members can either upgrade to App+ or subscribe to Breathwrk separately for access.)

Breathwrk is currently available in all Peloton Markets (the US, UK, Canada, Germany, Austria, and Australia), all other countries in the European Union, and Mexico.

  2. Tap the “Get Started” button.

  3. When asked if you’re a Peloton All-Access or App+ Member, tap “Yes.”

Once you’ve completed your first breathing exercise or class, it gets recorded in the Breathwrk App and synced with your Peloton account. Each exercise or class counts toward your streaks, Challenges, and workout history—meaning you can breathe your way to a new badge or streak, even on your workout rest days.

Benefits of Practicing Breathwork

While it seems inherently simple, the practice of breathwork offers several powerful benefits. Breathing exercises “can help you relieve stress, fall asleep, and feel more calm by increasing a parasympathetic response,” says Breathwrk founder Max Gomez. “Slow, deep belly breathing with long exhales helps decrease your heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension quickly.”

Here are just a handful of benefits you can expect when you do regular breathing exercises:

  • Stronger workout performance and recovery: When you think of breathwork, you might picture someone using it to quell anxiety or find calm. While those are certainly benefits of the practice (more on that below), breathing exercises are also an excellent way to prepare for a workout and recover smarter afterward. “Not only can breathwork make you more calm, but it can also help your strength and fitness as well,” Gomez says. “Certain exercises can improve alertness and focus which aid in training, while other exercises can help improve diaphragm strength through controlled belly breathing and breath holds. Building more breath control allows you to improve your training and endurance.”

  • Reduced stress and anxiety: Breathwork is an excellent tool to keep in your back pocket during high-stress situations, Gomez says. When your mind’s in overdrive and your heart is racing, deep, intentional breathing can help activate your body’s rest-and-digest response and help you feel grounded.

  • Better sleep: Can’t fall asleep or woke up in the middle of the night and can’t drift back off? Breathing exercises with extended exhales can be especially helpful for getting you to unwind and doze off.

  • Increased energy: Certain types of breathwork are designed to help you decompress, while others are built to rev you up. Breathing deeply boosts vitality by sending fresh oxygen and nutrients to your cells, but high-frequency breathing (think: inhaling for two counts and exhaling for one, then repeating) can also help lift your mood and energy levels.

  • Enhanced focus and attention: Need to get in the zone? Breathing exercises can sharpen mental clarity and help you lock in. Alternate nostril breathing, for example, provides your body with oxygen while engaging your diaphragm, experts say, helping you hone in your focus.

Best of all? Breathwork is easy to practice. “Breathing exercises are one of the fastest ways to regulate your nervous system and can be done any time, any place, and anywhere,” Gomez says. It also doesn’t ask much of your schedule: “Practicing just five minutes a day can lead to more calm and better sleep,” he adds. Give it a shot the next time you finish a Peloton workout or meditation class, or simply whenever you need to find calm, fall asleep, or boost focus and energy.
