Long story short, Usain “Lightning” Bolt is the fastest man on earth. With eight Olympic gold medals and countless world records to his name in events spanning the 100-meter sprint, 200-meter sprint and 4 x 100-meter relay, the sport of sprinting will forever be synonymous with the name and iconic victory pose of this legendary Jamaican athlete. A true once-in-a-generation phenomenon and absolute joy to behold for spectators worldwide, Usain retired from competition in 2017, but before you start to think that he’s left his competitive spirit behind, think again. Where better for an athlete of his caliber to channel his energy than the Peloton Leaderboard, of course?

“After I retired from professional track and field, I wanted something to motivate me and keep me in shape,” says Usain. “But I also prefer training in a group or community setting, and Peloton offers that.” Less than a year into his retirement, Usain joined the Peloton community by way of his Peloton Bike, which instantly became his new training partner for the next chapter of his story. “Peloton is a community where people come together to work out from the comfort of their own homes,” says Usain. “That’s one of my favorite things about Peloton—is that it is so easy to train at home. If I’m training alone, I can find something else to do or put it off, but working out with other people is really motivating.” That's the essential beauty of the Peloton community summed up: We’re motivated by world-class athletes like Usain to be our best—but he’s also motivated by the collective power of each and every one of us.

Usain let us in on a secret: He may have been the undisputed champion on the track, but he faces some serious competition from our Members on any given ride! “On the Leaderboard, I'll just pick someone to compete with. I’ll set my target and be like, ‘Alright. I will beat them!’ That really pushes me to give my best,” Usain says. “I’m a competitive person, and I always want to go as high as possible, but sometimes—whew!—these Members are serious. It’s no joke!”

Even casual sports fans know something about Usain Bolt’s story on the track, but there’s a rich private life behind the man that is just as critical to defining his path to success. Having grown up and trained for competition in Jamaica, Usain’s heritage and culture is integral to his story. A little-known tidbit is that his lightning speed was at first evident as a bowler on the cricket pitch at his high school. (Cricket is a sport still close to his heart.) And, Usain’s musical preferences decide not only which Peloton classes he loves to frequent (shoutout dancehall rides!), but also his personally produced tracks and DJ sets—heavily influenced by reggae. More recently, he’s become a father to now-one-year-old Olympia and newborn twins Thunder and Saint Leo—a role as natural as any the world has seen him in before.

Blink, and you’ll miss him as he goes by, but spend any amount of time getting to “know” Usain—including reading this very blog post—and you’ll learn that the 9.58 seconds it took for him to go down as legend were built upon a mountain of determination, passion and support. After all, his biggest tip to success is as follows: “Work hard, surround yourself with good people and enjoy what you do.”

Let's take his advice to heart as we Train Like Usain in this one-week Peloton Program designed by Usain himself, in collaboration with instructors Robin Arzón, Adrian Williams and Becs Gentry. It’s all on the Peloton App, under the Programs tab—no additional equipment needed. This is your chance to level up—big time! So whoever you are, lace up your trainers, and let’s get this Program started.

  • Name: Usain Bolt

  • Alter: 34

img-11-A Lightning Bolt on the Track; A Community Competitor on the Bike.
